Summary: Join us for a comprehensive legal update for employers presented by Amanda Walls and Nick Sellars of Peterson & Myers. Once someone finally feels like they truly understand employment law, it changes. So much of what HR professionals must do is stay abreast of key changes in the laws and legal interpretations that affect the workplace. As we have gone through a change in the administration, many of the most significant developments are from the regulatory agencies, but there are also significant court decisions to note. This update will take a broad view of recent developments, including new court decisions that impact employment and human resources. 

• A general wage & hour / FLSA update, exploring the potential impact of the Encino Motorcars, LLC v. Navarro U.S. Supreme Court ruling that FLSA exemptions are to be construed broadly and the new DOL rules for tipped employees.
  
• A refresher on sexual harassment in the workplace in light of recent media attention, and tips on how to prevent your organization from making the news.
  
• A general federal and Florida case law update, touching on subjects such as wage/pay discrimination, disability accommodation, and FMLA as well as the anticipated decision from the U.S. Supreme Court on fair-share payments for public employees.
  
• An administrative agency update, including the recent dramatic policy shifts from the National Labor Relations Board and general EEOC trends.
  

Speaker Bios:  

Amanda L. Walls is an associate with Peterson & Myers, P.A. and practices in the firm’s Lakeland office. She provides general counsel for business clients of various sizes, types, and industries with a focus on entity formation, corporate governance, business transactions, as well as labor and employment law compliance. She currently serves as General Counsel and on the Executive Committee for the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Walls also serves on the board of directors of the InnerAct Alliance, a non-profit focused on the prevention of substance abuse and addiction in Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties. 

Nicholas L. Sellars (Nick) was born and raised in Lakeland, Florida. He practices in the firm’s Lakeland office in the areas of civil and commercial litigation, business law, and estate planning. Upon graduation from Florida Southern, he attended Stetson University College of Law where he received his Juris Doctor in 2015, summa cum laude, graduating in the top two percent of his class.
