TOPIC:              Effective Decision Making in Workforce Management

SPEAKER:         Dr. Robert Greene

HRCI Credits:    6 SHRM PDC and HRCI Business Credit(s)

SummaryThe C Suite is increasingly asking "what is the evidence that supports that?" when HR or line managers recommend strategies and programs. Evidence-based management is becoming increasingly adopted and HR is utilizing workforce analytics to support recommendations. But no matter what the evidence there needs to be a well developed decision-making structure in place to ensure high quality decisions. The first step is to define the issues and then to decide who is involved and what their role is. HR often acts as an adviser, formulating recommendations based on professional expertise. Advisers should provide support for recommendations that is complete, accurate, clear and non-contradictory, directly verifiable, unbiased and actionable. There is a danger in relying solely on quantitative analysis... algorithms do not understand human nature or consider consequences. Using professional expertise and knowledge of human motivation HR practitioners must utilize all available decision-making tools but retain the responsibility for ensuring that professional judgment informs the results of analysis. It has been said that "sufficiently tortured data will confess to anything" and over-reliance on the "hard stuff" without considering the "soft (human) stuff" is fraught with peril.

This full day seminar will focus on effective processes for decision-making. Scenarios will be used to illustrate how analysis of evidence, both quantitative and qualitative, should be used to contribute to sound conclusions. Alternative methods will be presented, along with examples of how they have been used to address common workforce management issues. Attendees will be engaged to discuss their challenging issues and how they have addressed them.
