Labor Pains: Navigating the New Labor Environment

Mark joined Publix in 1998 and he is responsible for providing HR support to Publix Super Market’s nearly 1,300 stores and locations.  He is responsible for the Labor Relations Group consisting of the Survey and Assessment Department, the EAP Department, criminal background checks, drug testing and the company’s traditional labor relations function.

Mark has over 25 years of HR management experience with particular emphasis on employment, labor, and employee relations.  Mark attained his Ph.D. from Nova Southeastern University in 2020; his dissertation is entitled “Voice of the Employer: Winning Employer Messaging in NLRB Elections”. Mark previously graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with both an MBA, and a bachelor’s degree in HR.

Mark has served as President of three different SHRM local chapters, was named the HR Professional of the Year by the Florida State SHRM Council for 2018-19 and received the same award from both the San Antonio Human Resource Management Association as well as the Mid-Florida SHRM chapter at various points in his career.  Mark is on SHRM National’s Labor Relations Expertise Panel, and he also serves on many other committees and Boards.  He is also closing in on 20 year as a Professor teaching HR and LR Programs, currently at both Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern University. He has been married to Carla since 1988 and the two have two grown children.
