HR Ain't Your Mama: Putting Away Your Penchant to Parent
How often do you feel like working in HR is like parenting? Often in the workplace, we find our role in HR to be so far from what we think it should be. We figure everyone has common sense and should know what to do without us telling them. We work with adults, after all. Yet, our employees need help and turn to HR because we are the people department. And we help our people because that is our job. But what if it is more? What if it is leadership?
Sometimes we turn into our parents when trying to take care of our people and do not even realize it! But wait! Leadership is often compared to parenting. Simon Sinek said, "Being a good leader is just like being a good parent. They are one in the same." But what if it is more? What if it is serving?
During our time together, we will talk about real-life situations in HR and how we can navigate complex interactions resulting in positive outcomes and stronger relationships. In this session, participants will learn why it is critical for HR professionals to lead others by serving instead of parenting them.

Ella Kimbrel currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Harrell's LLC, a local fertilizer and chemical company. With a BS degree in Organizational Management and an MA in HR Management, Ella is also a certified senior human resource professional (SPHR and SHRM-SCP) with over 20 years of experience in Human Resources. She is a certified leadership coach, teacher, and speaker with the John Maxwell Team and loves to inspire and encourage others through her blog Ella Today. She lives in Lakeland with her husband, two daughters, and miniature dachshund.
