During this information-packed session, Dr. King will speak first about the use of medical marijuana and what employers can expect to see in employee performance while under the influence. David Steffen will follow Dr. King with a legal update on this legislation and the significant workplace disruptions and challenges employers can expect.

Speakers Bio:

Dr. Nancy Davis King

Dr. King is a native Floridian born in Lakeland, Florida. She attended Florida Southern College, where she graduated in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After working as an accountant with a Buffalo, New York-based contractor at the EPCOT site for one year, she returned to school to pursue a pre-med curriculum. She completed medical school at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and was accepted into the Internal Medicine residency program. She left USF to become the Medical Director at the Occupational Health Center in Auburndale, Florida, in 1990, and has been practicing Occupational Health for the past 35 years. She currently serves as Medical Director for The Occupational Health Center, Inc., Work Loss Management, Inc., and Occupational Health On-Site Services.

David Steffen, Partner, Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete

David is a partner who represents employers in a wide range of labor and employment matters, providing guidance on defending claims and developing proactive strategies to manage risk.

He advises companies on employment litigation in both state and federal courts, and represents clients before agencies such as the EEOC, the Florida Commission on Human Relations, the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division, OSHA, and the NLRB. David also helps employers craft effective workplace policies and deliver training to support compliance and operational goals.

David’s practice includes advising on class and collective actions, labor relations issues, and workers’ compensation consulting. He regularly assists clients in the retail, hospitality, sports, and entertainment industries, focusing on practical solutions that help limit exposure and avoid disputes before they arise. He counsels employers on managing employee substance abuse and developing cannabis policies to align with changing legal requirements.

David provides training and guidance to HR professionals and management teams on employment policy enforcement, labor relations strategy, and policy analysis. He has presented at numerous industry events and firm workshops on topics such as reductions in force, accommodations and employee leave, and medical marijuana policies. David’s collaborative approach emphasizes proactive planning, clear communication, and helping employers navigate complex employment laws to maintain productive, compliant workplaces.
